Defining Domestic Spaces, Family Workshop, Dallas Museum of Art

Defining Domestic Spaces is…

a family-focused workshop exploring how ideas of “home” are shaped by personal experience, cultural context, and artistic representation. Participants are introduced to the concept of domestic space as both a physical environment and an emotional landscape, examining how everyday spaces—such as kitchens, living rooms, and neighborhoods—reflect identity, memory, and relationships.

Drawing connections to 19th-century European art, the workshop highlights how artists have historically used domestic interiors to depict daily life, social roles, and emotional nuance. Through guided discussion, sketching exercises, and hands-on construction, participants reflect on their own domestic environments by visualizing the people, objects, and spaces that define “home.” The workshop culminates in the creation of three-dimensional home structures, encouraging participants to translate personal memory and meaning into tangible form while fostering creativity, storytelling, and intergenerational dialogue.
